An Introdcution to Multi Level Marketing


A Multilevel marketing plan typically has distributors selling the company's products and services. The distributors usually sign up as members with a start-up package. The distributors should be responsible especially when selling the products and when recruiting other people to become new distributors.

Multilevel Marketing or Multilevel networking is a method of having distributors to sell a company’s products and services. The plan is usually done by promising commissions for the distributor upon signing up. Commissions are given for each sale the distributor makes as well as the people they can recruit to be a member and be a distributor too. The distributor who will be recruited will become ones down line.

There are legal multilevel marketing businesses but there are also those with illegal plans like pyramiding. In a pyramid scheme the commissions will increase if the distributors or down lines increase. The products are usually sold to the distributors and not to the consumers generally. In a pyramid the products oftentimes are used to make the business or the marketing plan look legal.

Being a member of a pyramid scheme can give many risks because there are many members participating and most of them lose their money and only a few reap the commissions. Most of the members become pressured to buy more products which are many times expensive.

Before one joins a multilevel marketing plan, one should give it a lot of thinking and studying of the plan. Verify the track record of the company and the products they sell. Ask around if they sell the products to the general public and how much money one needs to invest to become a member or distributor. There are also other questions to consider like a monthly sales quota or the requirement of recruiting new members or distributors.

Beware when the company informs the members to buy a “start-up” package. Have a skeptical outlook when they make members commit to a particular amount of sales for the products or the services every month. The members spend their time attending the trainings and buying the products. The products should ultimately be sold to the consumers and not just the members or distributors.

When one decides to be a member or distributor, one takes on the responsibility of the company’s claims on the products and the opportunities it makes. There are organizations like the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) that will advise anyone intending to join a multilevel marketing plan to research the company’s claims specifically on the products and services before one repeats them to a prospective buyer.

It is necessary that a member who sells the product to the consumers knows the sufficient information about the products or services they sell. If the member also recruits another person to become a new member then everything should be fully explained before the person should sign up.
